Why Facebook Sucks for Job Search

Why Facebook Sucks for Job Search Tap the words jobs and Facebook into Google and see what happens. You will find internal careers at the company and thats it. How come there is no general careers section on Facebook? Why isn’t there a job board built into the world’s largest social network? You’re not the only one to wonder why this may be. When Eduardo Saverin, tax refugee and co-founder of Facebook, left and set up Joboozle which is a social network focused on jobs, he didn’t please Mark Zuckerberg. Zuck emailed Eduardo stating he was disappointed and that Facebook would probably do something with jobs. This indicates that launching a career section on Facebook was definitely on the cards back in the day at ‘The Facebook’. Sure Facebook is a place for friends and family but they all have jobs as well. What happened? Not much. Instead you had another network called LinkedIn taking the big slice of professional networking and to this day they are dominating the career and social networking space. So does that mean you can’t find a job on Facebook? Well, there have been a few attempts at cracking this, here are some: BranchOut Earlier this year the professional networking app BranchOut was branded a serious contender to LinkedIn. Their user figures grew astronomically to 25 million users and they were apparently signing up 3 users per second. With that rate of sign-ups and the fact that Facebook already have almost 1 billion users, it looked plausible that this app could be a contender to LinkedIn. A few months later we learn that BranchOut have actually lost members instead. Whether the figures were there to attract more investors or users we don’t know. Some call BranchOut a giant Ponzi scheme, with user-friendly badges. BeKnown Monster launched their professional networking tool on Facebook last year called BeKnown. Well, it WasKnown last year but it hasn’t been in the news since. Social Bakers report that BeKnown has 240,000 active users per month and it’s the 481st most popular app on Facebook. So it doesnt look as a serious contender at this stage. See what one user thinks at  How To Find Graduate Jobs on Facebooks BeKnown. Company Facebook Pages Yes there are a few applications that allow Page owners to list jobs on a separate tab. This can be useful when you already know what company you want to work for and you have liked the Page already. But that doesnt help anyone looking for a Java programmer job at any company in Manchester. Going the company route is similar to clicking on to the website of a business, then clicking to see current vacancies. Facebook Social Jobs Partnership Here’s the most promising initiative of them all, the Social Jobs Partnership is Facebook’s own job listing pilot. This was run as a not-for-profit scheme matching jobseekers positions at local authorities around the US. This is still getting started and Facebook state: “This initiative provides resources to help Americans use technology to find jobs”. Sounds a bit like LinkedIn to me actually. The future With Facebook’s disappointing IPO the other month, one can expect them to bring out new features and a proper career section could be one of these. Recruiters and employers are chomping at the bits to be able to search through profiles and contact users for opportunities â€" surely a lucrative revenue stream for Zuck co. What do you think; will Facebook be a place for most people’s social job search one day? Related: How Facebook is the Worst Place for Networking.

How to Write a Summary on a Resume

How to Write a Summary on a ResumeThere is a summary on a resume for job applications. Many job seekers usually try to avoid writing a resume altogether because they think that it is not needed. However, if you want to get hired and make a lot of money, you need to know how to write a resume. To have a well-formatted resume, you must remember that every important document must be made from scratch using a method that is an effective way of conveying your message. The general outline of a resume must consist of a summary on a resume for job applications. This summary should inform the reader what type of information you can provide him or her with. On the other hand, you have to make sure that your summary does not contain anything that might not be of interest to them. When writing a resume, do not forget that a small part of the document is for you. Remember that your resume will be the first thing that your interviewer will see when he/she asks you to apply for a job. Therefore, you must emphasize on your abilities that you can contribute to their company. You cannot do this by stressing your lack of experience or anything else. Remember that you are still a candidate and not a professional employee.Your summary on a resume will state a few things about you. First, it will state your name and address. Secondly, it will tell what kind of experience you have had so far. Thirdly, you must let the reader know why you are good for the job. Your summary should show you the value of your skills and abilities, the things that make you a good fit for the company.Do not become too technical when writing your summary. Avoid giving out information that you cannot explain. This will just bore the reader and makes him/her want to click away. Even if you have written a summary on a resume for job applications that includes your work history and your skills, do not forget to include the location where you live and the contact number so that you can be contacted. If you have a Facebook account, you should use it to let people know where you are and how you can be reached. If you have worked in the same field for a long career, do not omit mentioning it. If you think that people will judge you by your current employment, you can post your latest job openings online. Remember that by being upfront and giving details will make you seem like a more genuine candidate. When writing your summary on a resume, also remember to list all the important information. This includes your educational background, your hobbies, and any skills you have that were required by the job. On the other hand, if you have any awards or recognitions, you should give a summary of them as well. Some people may have problems reading resumes, so you have to have a printed version of it.It will be easier to read a resume if the summary is written in such a way that it can be easily skimmed. This means that it is an effective way of writing a resume and you should be proud of what you have ac complished.

Less than half of adults understand compound interest - Debut

Less than half of adults understand compound interest - Debut Uh, world, you kk? Apparently, less than half of adults understand this key financial principle: the principle of compound  interest. If youre reading this, scratching your head and wondering what on earth compound  interest is, youre not alone. A survey conducted by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) interviewed over 50,000 adults in 30 developed and developing countries. Survey participants were tested on these things: their financial knowledge, attitudes and behaviour. According to the results, France came in with the highest level of financial know-how, and Poland came last. The results breakdown The study measured whether participants were able to calculate this problem: Can a $100 savings account compounding at an interest rate of 2% a year would total more or less than $110 over five years? (Spoiler, the answer is  more.) Only 42% of participants got this answer correct. The results for the simpler math problems were only slightly better, with 58% of participants getting the answer correct. The results measuring financial behaviour were both fascinating and worrying. Only 60% of adults said they maintained a household budget, and only half have set long-term financial goals. Only 44% of participants shopped around when it came to choosing financial products in the past two years, and only 19% used independent information to evaluate their choices. Money management is a seriously necessary adult skill, but its not something thats taught in most schools. Perhaps there is something to be said about introducing a module at sixth form or university that could help educate young people  in their transition to adulthood. Seriously though, what is compound  interest? Sigh. Right, here we go. Heres what MathsIsFun.com had to say about compound interest.  For a really in depth look, click on the link, and it should tell you whats up. Dont say we dont take care of you now. Who Quits Their Job in This Economy

Who Quits Their Job in This Economy According to the most recent report released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, more employees left their jobs voluntarily in March (1.9M) than were laid off (1.8M). You may be wondering why so many are quitting their jobs in what is still a volatile economy, but the reality is that people quit their jobs despite economic indicators for a variety of reasons. Here are some of the reasons employees tell me they quit their jobs or are seriously considering resigning.1. They were underemployed. Some people took their jobs in 2008 when the market soured and they compromised to earn a paycheck. They continued searching for other positions and now their hard work has paid off and they have found another position.2. They were stretched to their limit.Once heavy layoffs occurred at companies, many were forced to do more with less. Working in an environment that lacks the appropriate resources to get the job done is bound to take its toll. Many employers have not adequately engaged their employ ees or rewarded them with non-monetary incentives during the lean years and as a result, some are now losing their star players.3. Opportunity knocked. Many kept in touch with recruiters, built a strong network, or regularly checked leads on job boards. And some found offers they couldnt refuse. For others, there was a ripple effect; when other employees left their jobs for any of the voluntary reasons on this list, it opened up an opportunity for someone else to come in and take their place.4. They couldnt stand their boss. For some, the stress of managing the relationship outweighed the stress of a job search and some felt it was better to quit than potentially be fired and risk a bad reference due to a deteriorating relationship.5. The job stress was killing them. Some developed health issues that were exacerbated by the job, and they determined that the only way to redeem their health was to resign from the position and take care of their physical issues.6. They were bored to tears .Many came to the realization that they werent learning anything new on the job and their chances for upward mobility were limited. Rather than waste away slowly, they made the decision to act on their concerns and re-channel their energy into finding a new, more rewarding position.7. The company was struggling. Some saw the writing on the wall and saw signs that even though they had a job today, they may not have one tomorrow. Getting out while they could still collect on whatever benefits and perks they were entitled to seemed like a better plan than waiting until the company had nothing to give them.8. They were offered a voluntary package.Frequently when employers know they may be facing a downsizing in the near future, they offer employees an enticing compensation package to voluntarily resign. Voluntary packages generally come with some sort of financial guarantee, which tend to diminish with each new round of offers. Employees who choose to wait out the employers rough patch c an end up with nothing. Many would rather take the money and run than wait and see where the chips will land.9. Their life changed.People also leave jobs to start a family, take care of aging parents, travel around the world, relocate, or make a career change. Responsibilities to others or listening to an inner calling often fuel resignations.10. They started their own business. It can be scary to start your own business in a turbulent economy. But some were motivated to do so due to dissatisfaction in their jobs or because they were ready to turn a personal passion into a new career and business. If you are unemployed or dissatisfied in your current position, you too may benefit from the surge of vacancies left by others who voluntarily resign. A job that is not a good match for another person may be the perfect match for you.

Is it Time to Look for a Job Overseas

Is it Time to Look for a Job Overseas The United States job market seems to be picking up steam, but there is still a lot of recovery to be done if the job market is to regain its pre-recession levels. Some Americans are not waiting for that and are deciding to forgo the tumultuous U.S. job market for something more certain, like jobs overseas. U.S. expats are becoming a regularity in overseas job markets as more Americans find it difficult to locate jobs in their native country and decide to opt out. So what are the signs that it’s time to look for a job overseas? 1. If your position has already been reduced If your position is in decline in America that doesn’t mean there isn’t a market for your skills in another country. A lot of programmers have left to find work in Europe or in Asia’s developing markets. There is also a lot of opportunity in South America, where countries like Brazil and Peru have seen a remarkable turnaround and an expanding middle class. Plus, just think of all the delicious food youd get to have daily! 2. If you just want to get out and try something new If you’re just interested in taking a break from the traditional work you’ve been doing, then why not consider teaching in another country? English as a second language requires their teachers to be fluent English speakers and have a degree. Your degree does not have to be in English, in fact you do not have to even have a teaching certificate, but some require that you complete a course before you can be hired. This may not be an option for everyone but it’s a great way to get a job overseas. 3. You’ve stopped growing as an employee If you have nothing to look forward to each day, then what are you doing at your job? If you’re not improving your skills or building your position within the company, maybe you would be better off with an employer overseas. Overseas employers typically offer challenging goals to their employees while providing for growth opportunities within the company. Red lights should be flashing if you have been with your company for a few years without any opportunities. You might even like the challenge of getting acclimated to a new lifestyle. 4. The economy takes another downturn If the economy takes another tumble and the job market suffers, it would be a good idea to look for jobs in other areas. Canada is a great location within the North American continent that offers great opportunities for expats, while keeping close to family and friends. The homesickness should fade soon thanks to Canada’s proximity to the U.S., the lack of a language barrier and the availability of jobs. Aye? No matter what you want to do with your career, if you decide to look for work overseas, make sure that you take in all the factors. It’s not like moving down the street but it could be a great opportunity to advance your career.
