What we need from our bosses to succeed at work

What we need from our bosses to succeed at workWhat we need from our bosses to succeed at workEmployee engagement is the difference between seeing your work as a job or as a career. If youve ever worked in an office counting down the hours till you can clock out, you know this intimately. But a new comprehensive human resources study can now back you up with numbers. In an Officevibe real-time datasurvey of 50,000 employees across 150 countries, the software company found that workers across the world needed the same core needs - which included recognition, feedback, personal growth, and work-life balance- met to succeed in the workplace and to stay happy at their jobs.Recognition and feedbackHaving your hard work acknowledged is key to feeling invested in your job. Too many employees, however, arent getting the recognition they need.In fact, 63% of the employees surveyed believed that their work wasnt being recognized. Thats nearly two-thirds of American workers walking around feeli ng invisible. Not feeling appreciated is coupled with the equally discouraging feeling that no one cares enough to check what youre doing. 32% of employees said they had to wait more than three months to get feedback. This cloud of negativity and apathy is what causes employees to disengage and quit. More than half of employees in a Gallup study said they would jump ship for a new job that would give them more recognition and praise.Employees and managers can fix this by offering positive reinforcement early and often. Its an unlimited resource. Theres no cap to how much praise you can give.A Harvard Business Review analysis even found that positive reinforcement makes more of a difference in employee relationships with managers than corrective criticism. Managers who only give negative feedback were seen as leaders who only saw whats wrong. Employees started to think that their bosses were unfit to lead if they were unable to see the whole picture. The takeaway from all this dont wit hhold praise. It can only help you.One more tip dont just say good job. Thats a generic Hallmark card version of praise. Its more effective if you make it authentic and individualized to that persons contributions to the company.A chance to move up in their careersNew opportunities and challenges are how we keep growing in our careers. Unfortunately, over half of respondents in the survey said they didnt have any career advancement opportunities. When youre not getting these challenges for professional development, you start to get bored and feel stuck, and youll look at that recruiters email with more interest.Work-life balance23% percent of employees reported leaving work feeling exhausted. When your body starts to break down because of a job, it begins to feel untenable to go on. Employers should encourage wohlbefinden programs, frequent vacations, and regular breaks to prevent this burnout.Work cultureThis one makes or breaks companies. How can you increase your companys growth i f your own employees dont recommend the pace of your place?Over 56% of employees surveyed in the study said they wouldnt recommend their organizations as good places to work. They were more willing to recommend the companys products rather than their own teams. Without that positive work culture, you have a corrosive attitude like the employees surveyed had- one that will erode any good will and job satisfaction. These findings show that employee happiness begins with feeling invested in your job and that your company is invested in you. And not just in what you bring to the table as an employee, but you, the whole human.

The Tarzan Robot Assists Agriculture

The Tarzan Robot Assists Agriculture The Tarzan Robot Assists Agriculture The Tarzan Robot Assists AgricultureAgriculture continues to evolve as the worlds population grows and the climate changes, and assessing crops as they grow requires people and time. But robots may provide a solution. The Tarzan robot named after the Edgar Rice Burroughs character because it swings around on overhead lines to landsee the crops from different angles is one option researchers are exploring when it comes to robotics and farming. The idea is to have many of these robots covering large square footage, and communicating with each other to check different areas and evaluate conditions.More Mouths to FeedBy 2050 there is projected to be nine billion people on the planet that will need more food, and there are a whole group of researchers trying to make plants better than existing ones, says Ai-Ping Hu, senior research engineer for Georgia Tech Research Institute. With soybeans, we have a partnership w ith the University of Georgia working with professors there and looking for strengths like drought tolerance. You can also look at aspects such as temperature of leaves, angles, size. This is called phenotyping, looking at outward physical expression. The Tarzan robot team from left Siavash Farzan, Ai-Ping Hu, Professor Jonathan Rogers, and Evan Davies. Image Georgia TechTheres a great absprache of interest in automating this process, he says, with some looking at UAVs or drones to serve this purpose. But, he adds, a problem is that they have a short battery life. They can fly for 20 to 30 minutes, but maybe a dedicated pilot is needed, he says. There are also safety issues and FAA regulations.Making parallel clotheslines was the start of the project. By having robots with lots of sensors, on cables, and having them talking to each other, we can do really detailed phenotyping that I dont think you can get with UAVs, he explains. Our way is a swinging motion which is called brachiatio n, a very efficient form of locomotion. The Tarzan robots parts include two carbon fiber armsat a central pivot where the payload is and the hands are made of 3D printed plastic. There is a thermal sensor and an app that will talk to a thermal camera and look at an accelerometer and snap images when there is no longer shaking. At one point, the goal was to have the fingertips grip the cable with compression, but that was found to be unreliable because of slippage. They changed to a design where the fingertips go over the cable safety in case it slips through the grip. The robots only need to be trickle charged with solar power and dont have to leave the power lines. Because they are close to the ground, the images are very detailed. We can move the cables as we go along but they are currently about six feet above, he says. As plants grow, soybean plants get to about five feet tall and we will have to go higher than that so they dont hit them when swinging to get the field of view we wan t.The robot weighs 10 pounds and will cost around $1,000, Hu says. Were looking forward to getting all the results in the field, he says, But we see a strong chance at assistance for farmers, which may lower costs for consumers.Eric Butterman is an independent writer. Were looking forward to getting all the results in the field. Engineering and Reshoring Creativity Matters

Engineering and Reshoring Creativity Matters Engineering and Reshoring Creativity Matters Engineering and Reshoring Creativity MattersReshoringbringing manufacturing work back to the U.S. from lower-cost countriesis a critical issue for the U.S. manufacturing industry and the national economy. Technical investments that can make manufacturers more competitive include Industry 4.0, the Internet of Things, additive manufacturing, automation, robotics, and big-data analytics. However, looking at the engineering design process itself is just as important. How can it be improved to boost efficiency and reduce cost? Eliminating unnecessary complexity or extra steps will streamline the engineering process, making this a significant factor in making onshore costs competitive.Take, for example, Mitchell Metal Products (MMP) in Merrill, WI. This contract manufacturer makes a variety of products for original equipment manufacturers across a wide range of industries. In 2016, the company submit ted a bid to a U.S.-based manufacturer of lawn and garden equipment to manufacture a handle for a cultivator that welches currently being made in Southeast Asia. During the bidding process, we had to display ur value compared to the total costs involved with, and compared to, the offshore supply chain, states MMP President Tim Zimmerman.MMP president Tim Zimmerman explains how creative engineering design was integral to his projects success. This required a deep dive into the companys traditional methods of manufacturing to find ways to reduce costs enough to win the project and still make money. MMP assembled a cross-functional gruppe that included most internal departments, two subcontractors, and the tooling staff. The result was a new process that increased the production volume of the cultivator handle subassembly product from 4,500 made overseas to 30,000 made in Wisconsin. In fact, this project received the first-ever National Reshoring Award in October 2017 from the Reshoring Initiative for bringing manufacturing back to the U.S.Creative engineering design was an integral part of this overall success. In the following, Tim Zimmerman discusses how creative engineering changes made the project viable.Q What were the engineering challenges required for this project? A There were two challenging factors we needed to address with ur internal engineering talent in buchung to offer a cost to ur end customer that was competitive with the offshore source. Both challenges were related to the kickstand component of the full assembly 1) the kickstand bracket (a metal stamping component), and 2) assembly of bracket, wire form, springs, fasteners, and washers. The issue with each was the same using traditional processes, the labor involved was too costly.Q Tell us about the kickstand bracket. A The kickstand is a subcomponent part of the cultivator handle assembly. The annual volume of assemblies at the time we made our offer was quite low, 3,000 to 4,500 assemblies per year. This type of volume does not support a large, progressive tool. Traditionally, the kickstand bracket would be tooled in stage tools, which creates multiple operations to complete the part. We did not have enough room in our costing structure to support multiple operations. On the flip side, our die design software was suggesting a 16-station progressive tool. The cost for us to build such a tool was prohibitive. The reason so many stations were being called for is because there are extruded holes on each side of the bracket. Their alignment through the entire extruded length of the hole is critical to proper performance of the kickstand.Winning the project to produce this kickstand required MMP to rethink traditional methods of manufacturing. The challenge for our engineering staff was to create a progressive tool with far fewer stations than the automated software was calling for. In the end we designed a toolwith half the stations initially required. This allowed us to br ing costs into line. In order to reduce the number of stations, we designed two cam-driven stations, which replaced several stations designed to assure proper alignment of extruded holes. Two other stations were combined into one as well. The tool is working very well for us. It is a leistungspunkt to the ingenuity of our staff that we created a robust, well-performing tool at greatly reduced cost. Tooling took seven weeks to finalize design, build, and put into service. From time to time, especially with challenging tool designs, we employ a virtual tool try-out where the tool design is run through a simulated production process, which we did with this project. We rented time on a simulator rather than host our own simulation software suite. This way, we have connection to simulators who have access to very robust steel data, which is essential if the simulation is going to be meaningful.Q How did you deal with assembly of the kickstand? A We conducted time studies of the proposed a ssembly process for the kickstand during the quoting process. It quickly became apparent we would need to semi-automate the assembly process in order to maintain the labor cost allowance we had available. Our engineers and tool department worked together to design an air-powered assembly cell, allowing us to assemble the kickstand bracket, wire form, fasteners, springs, and washers in a matter of seconds rather than minutes, as would be the case if the process was done manually. Not only was speed important, but the cell also had to be designed and constructed in a very cost-effective manner. Once again, the team came through and created a work cell that met our investment budget and brought throughput to a level that allowed us to submit an ultimately successful bid for the project.Although the process was quite straightforward, our team took great care to build the cell in an ergonomically friendly manner. Parts are loaded in a way that allows the operator to maintain great postur e. As production runs became larger and larger, this factor greatly reduced and/or eliminated operator fatigue. The flow of parts into the work center is essential for allowing us to maintain efficient throughput. Good attention to detail in design, along with incorporating suggestions from operators who work in the department, allowed us to be successful. Sometimes the important innovations that become game-changers are not the technology itself, but the way the technology is employed, enabling operators to perform at high level.Q Overall, what did it cost to make these engineering improvements? A We incurred about $25,000 in cost, which we footed ourselves in order to land this project. We calculated we would save around $13,000 annually as a result, which placed the investment within our 24-month pay-back period. This may not sound like a lot of money, however, if we did not have the internal resources to design and build tools, fixtures, and work stations, the cost to have done t his outside would easily be five to eight times the investment we made. Our internal capabilities are what allowed us to be successful.Q Any advice for other manufacturers about bringing back work from overseas? A An important concept was that we had to envision and somewhat design each of the ideas at the time we quoted the project. It then became absolutely critical the concepts be turned into actual tools to be utilized as planned in the production process. As a contract manufacturer, it is vital to approach every important new opportunity seeking an innovative way to approach it. This means that as an organization, we must quickly vet ideas and concepts, and do so with great confidence. It requires a mix of knowledge, experience, and access to the latest in technology, including die simulation software. Our design engineers also work very closely with our tooling department. It is the knowledge gained, both ways, that allows us to be successful and offer ingenious concepts to our customers. Design engineers learn great detail regarding our internal production operations as a result. The tool-and-die professionals learn much about cost-effectiveness and automation from the design staff. It is truly a win/win situation.Mark Crawford is an independent writer. For Further Discussion

Experts Agree Diversity Begins and Ends With a Sense of Belonging in the Hiring Process

Experts Agree Diversity Begins and Ends With a Sense of Belonging in the Hiring ProcessDiversity isnt a buzzword hiring pros are using to attract top talent. Theyre serious about it, and the strong focus on improving diversity isnt going anywhere anytime soon. In fact, in LinkedIns Global Recruiting Trends 2018 report, 78 percent of recruiters say diversity is very or extremely important to their recruitment strategy. Another 53 percent say theyve already mostly or completely adopted it. This push toward diversity hiring is a result of company leaders wanting to create a unique and positive employee experience, increase company-wide productivity, and improve retention. However, without belonging, behauptung diversity efforts wont have a lasting impact on employees and their organizations. Thats why 57 percent of recruiters in LinkedIns report also said theyre very or extremely focused on belonging. To create the best possible employee experience, this sense of belonging must start du ring the hiring process. Heres how the experts go about doing just that 1. Enhance blind hiringThe broken hiring process begins with recruiting. Too often, managers hand recruiters job descriptions with a type of person already in mind. We all fall into certain categories, but as human beings, we cant fully be personified by any one set of attributes. The keys to recruiting diverse hires are a strategy centered around balanced cultural understanding, exposing candidates to the inclusive and egalitarian nature of the business early on, and developing an approach to answering questions that candidates may have, even before they ask.Despite its shortcomings, blind hiring is a good practice that, with some tweaks, can untersttzungsangebot diversity as well as cultural fit within a candidate pool. At G2 Crowd, we give an aptitude and personality test to every potential candidate. When it comes to blind hiring, the concern for many is that it wont support cultural fit. However, these conc erns can be addressed by centering company culture around inclusion. When given standardized, open-format questions, candidates can demonstrate what they value, without having to reveal who they are in a face-to-face meeting.Jori Ford, Senior Director of SEO and Brand Marketing, G2 CrowdWith a few tweaks, blind hiring can save your DiversityandInclusion hiring efforts. chicagoseoproClick To Tweet2. Dont harbor the candidatesBelonging can be a critical component of creating acceptance and reducing the occurrence of harassment and discrimination. It brings a more human aspect to the equation which reduces the chances of discrimination and harassment. An interview process that involves current employees is a great way to create that sense of belonging. Unfortunately, many professionals dont expose candidates to the work area at all during the hiring process. Take them on a tour, show them the unique or beautiful areas of your building as well as the utilitarian spaces like the breakroo m. I worked in three different environments for a month. Heres what I found

I worked in three different environments for a month. Heres what I foundI worked in three different environments for a month. Heres what I foundAs a freelance writer working part-time for a content marketing agency, I have the luxury of choosing my favorite workspace. However, I welches never sure which distributions-mix that welches. Often Id stick to the daily amtsstube wissen even if I didnt feel productive there. Other times I stayed home to finish some tasks but didnt accomplish much. There had to be a better way.To get a more objective idea about which work environment best boosts my productivity and creativity, I signed myself up for an experiment. Over the period of a month, I would test my productivity in three different locations. Every week I would work one day at home, one day at the office, and one day at a coffee shop.To see how each location affected my productivity, I tracked my work hurs with a time tracking app called DeskTime. This software differentiates productiv e and unproductive apps and websites and registers the time spent away from the computer.Clearly, this experiment is entirely subjective and based on my experience and profession. But even if I thought I knew my working habits inside out, the results admittedly surprised me. Heres what I foundOffice work led to more socializingProductivity 85%Personal satisfaction 4/5Offices can be different, as well as jobs. In my writers profession, teamwork sometimes comes second to focused, individual work.My agencys office is a rather small common space where our team of five does mostly creative work. However, we also socialize a lot, hold discussions and meetings with clients. Because of these offline activities, my time tracking app often showed that my productivity (time spent at the computer using productive apps) in the office was reduced. But teamwork and meetings are also an essential part of work, so the unproductive hours werent always that unproductive. (Note I could have also logged offline time for a meeting, however, my aim was to track productivity for my primary writing tasks.)This chart depicts my typical office workday - with peaks of productivity and deep trenches of distraction. (Note green stands for productive time, red - for unproductive time, and grey - for neutral time.)You can see that on an average office day Im far from the ideal productivity schedule - working for 52 minutes and breaking for 17 minutes. On the contrary, my breaks are not evenly spread out throughout the day. Rather Im trying to focus, suddenly I get distracted and then Im scrambling to regain peak performance.Especially unproductive office days were those that came after home office and coffee shop work days. There was a lot to discuss and catch up about, and it was fun to meet my colleagues after a short break.Coffee shop ambiance boosted creativityProductivity 87%Personal satisfaction 2/5Working in a coffee shop was so far an unknown territory for me. In fact, I didnt un derstand why so many people flock to the cafes for work - isnt it expensive, uncomfortable, and inefficient?I was right about two things. First, its not cheap to spend the day in a coffee shop. Second, I did feel less comfortable working in a public space where everyone was a stranger and had to pack my stuff merely to go to the bathroom. However, this lead to a surprising increase in productivity - I buried myself in work to avoid thinking about my lack of comfort. You can see that my productivity graph looks more spikey, the productive zone is more profound, but there are even fewer quality breaks. This is easily explained by the fact that I didnt take breaks while working in a coffee shop because I had nothing else to do but work. And, of course, drink coffee. Also, I felt that my productivity increase in cafes was caused by the lack of other serious distractions. Yes, there was background noise - but none of it was my business. Nobody knew me or could distract me from work. Fur thermore, I felt a fresh wave of inspiration as I was writing in this unfamiliar place - new ideas kept flowing in, and my work motivation was high.It turns out, several studies support my coffee shop experience, suggesting that the ambient noise improves creativity. The low-level sound makes it more difficult for the brain to process information, thus stimulating abstract thinking and creative problem-solving. Other studies suggest that mental effort is contagious, and seeing other people work hard in the coffee shop motivates you to do the same.On the other hand, I noticed that I usually stopped working earlier when I was in a coffee shop due to the same feeling of discomfort. In short - even though the coffee shop exerted a kind of forced productivity and a bit of uneasiness, I know where Im heading when the next urgent deadline comes up.The home office works best for long tasksProductivity 91%Personal satisfaction 5/5For me, home is a very satisfying work environment. But I did nt expect it to be such a productive one, too. Mind that this will never be the case for all professions and even all types of people. And your productivity also depends on other people around the house that could potentially distract you from work. In my case, I was alone and could plan my day as I pleased. This graph shows that my home office day had more consecutive sessions of focused work. This routine was especially helpful for tasks that required concentration and silence, like writing long, in-depth articles. The few breaks I took were more efficient and satisfying. I only decided to take breaks when I was tired or felt stuck with a task, not when I was interrupted at work by other colleagues asking me something. Furthermore, I spent the breaks away from the computer, doing a small house chore, like washing the dishes. Again, unlike the office where most breaks consisted of chats with colleagues in the same room at my desk. The home office was also good for my personal satisfac tion. After a day of working in my most comfortable environment and my own natural pace, I felt rested and energized for the rest of the week.Final notesIn short, I reached my highest levels of productivity (91%) when I was working from home. However, this was influenced by the specifics of my profession and the fact that I enjoyed working in my most comfy environment. I must also admit that my productivity is always affected by the proximity of a deadline - the greatest performance booster wherever I am.Personally, I believe that the secret sauce is being able to change your work location sometimes - especially if your profession is a creative one. No wonder successful companies design their offices as hybrid spaces with many alternative workplaces to your desk.Just as time is an elusive creature, your productivity isnt easy to fit in one box or another. The best strategy would be to track your own time in different environments and times of day and adjust to what suits your mind and body best. For example, now I know that when an urgent deadline arises, Ill head to the nearest coffee shop. When I want to hear my colleagues advice and be in the loop about everything, the office is the place to be. But when I need to do research or write a longer piece, I better stay at home.As you scout for your favorite workspace, dont forget other productivity tips that could boost your performance wherever you are.IevaBaranova is a writer at Truesix.co, a content marketing agency that helps European startups access English speaking markets. Begin with the opening summary. While its only three sentences long, it fits in a good deal of valuable information without becoming overwhelming. This short statement is your first impression as much as a strong handshake or positive smile and should convey the same level of confidence in your capabilities. The sample candidate in our resume example knows she excels in driving efficiency, profitability, process excellence, equipment analysis, and light industrial and component manufacturing. Including these in the summary immediately places her as s omeone who knows her industry and can navigate her job with confidence. After such a statement, it can seem strange to move on to such a simple, short bulleted list of core qualifications. This simple list is actually one of the best-kept secrets of an excellent resume. The majority of employers now use screening software to filter candidates, and screening criteria are generally defined by keyword density. Different employers rely on different keywords, and this bullet list lets you keep your resume agile and flexible enough to adapt to each new job application by changing up the core qualifications to meet job expectations. Our manufacturing engineer resume sample includes a number of good terms to use, such as team collaboration and solutions development, but you should scan each job you apply for and refresh the list as needed. Now all thats needed is to show your skills in action. You should writer your employment history with quick, action-driven bullet statements that mix accom plishments and duties, such as the ISO certification process and implementation of analytical spreadsheets mentioned in our manufacturing engineer resume sample. Following these principles in a resume will paint you as an achiever, rather than a doer and employers want candidates who drive results. Why You Need a Strong Manufacturing Engineer ResumeThe United States Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that manufacturing engineering job growth has slowed to a crawl at 1 percent, well below the national average of 6 to 7 percent. While its better than job segments that are actively shrinking, stagnation isnt exactly the ideal condition for the avid jobseeker. When the job market isnt moving, its up to you to create your own momentum. The best way to do this is with a strong resume that promises youre able to thrive even in the most downtrodden market.Considering the specialized skills involved in manufacturing engineering and the effort required to attain them, theres no shame in braggin g about the skills youve acquired. Displaying your knowledge, such as the manufacturing engineer resume sample does, is the key to opening doors to prospective employers.Costly Manufacturing Engineer Resume Mistakes To AvoidMany jobseekers follow outdated practices that reduce a resume to contact information and a lifeless list of prior roles. In the modern job market, just your experience isnt enough to win an employers favor. You need to sell yourself the same way youd sell a potential process change to key stakeholders, by presenting more than bare minimum facts. By fleshing out your resume with an opening summary and supplementary keywords like those in our sample, you demonstrate youre worth every penny of your salary.Although manufacturing engineering is a highly complex discipline, many engineers acquired their knowledge on the job rather than through degrees or certifications. If you havent completed a degree or certification program, you still shouldnt omit the education se ction of your resume. Instead list any relevant training courses, particularly recent ones that may involve new methodologies or programs. The manufacturing engineer resume sample also emphasizes multiple job-specific skills that make the candidate an ideal fit, including ISO and LEAN.ConclusionIt shouldnt take a Kaizen event to tischset your career in motion and revive it from a standstill, but you can still lead your professional transformation by revitalizing your resume. Reference our manufacturing engineer resume sample for the best practices you need to attract employers and improve your mglichkeits of a prospect turning into a solid lead.Manufacturing Engineer Resume Questions1. Why our old approach to college is putting a new generation at risk

Why our old approach to college is putting a new generation at risk Why our old approach to college is putting a new generation at risk Society has done a huge disservice to young people by relying on outdated educational and workforce training models developed 50 years ago. Our one-size-fits-all approach that promotes college as the single path to a profitable, high-skilled profession is putting both the economy and an entire generation at risk.We face a national crisis of rising college costs, decreasing degree-requiring jobs, and employer frustration with the younger generations in the workplace. Meanwhile, we’re pushing young people to obtain college degrees while simultaneously ignoring the importance of also acquiring valuable work skills. As a result, only 1 in 5 students feel prepared for today’s job market. We’re saddling them with enormous college debt for degrees that may not pay off.Today’s emphasis should no longer be just about getting young people ready for college. It should be about preparing them for careers for which college is one of many available pathways. College is a great postsecondar y option â€" if their career path requires it. Too many young people today go just to go, and too often, because of lack of forethought or direction, they choose a field of study where there either are no jobs available or they aren’t adequately trained for a profession.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more! What young people don’t often know â€" because no one tells them before they venture into higher education â€" is that there are great, living-wage careers to pursue that don’t require them to go to college. Many of today’s high-paying, high-skilled careers require a specialized industry credential or certification, not a college degree.Sending young people off to study for degrees without regard for whether they’re actually being trained for a viable profession has resulted in an alarming skills gap in today’s workforce. Employers are starving for people with han ds-on skills and experiences that come from certifications, apprenticeships, licensures, and career training programs. A recent study showed that by 2025, the United States will be short 11 million qualified workers to support the economy.Manufacturers around the country, for example, are in desperate need of precision machinists. But attracting the younger generation to the work is remarkably difficult because of the stigma that only lower-performing students choose this kind of career. Still, the field offers immediate employment, high wages, and advanced opportunities. Far from the old stereotype of a dead-end factory job, work in this field now ranges from a robot operator to a machine builder to a computer automated manufacturing engineer.Students in both middle and high schools need to be made aware of the plethora of career avenues available and their respective training and salary prospects. Intentional career planning early on will allow them to choose advanced education pu rposefully and give them a better chance of reaching their goals.Prioritizing early career exploration also:1. Gives young people a sense of directionOnce they’re made aware that their interests can translate into exciting career opportunities, they can begin exploring the appropriate academic pre-requisites and early training opportunities that will catapult them into a promising future.2. Answers the “why” behind their high school education“Because I said so” is not enough of a reason for Gen Y and Zers who want to know the “why” behind all of what’s asked of them. Opening their eyes to the pathway toward their chosen career can spark enthusiasm to perform at a higher level. They’ll understand the relevance of their education to the life and career they want to achieve.3. Invites more experiential learningWhen teachers, coaches, and counselors know what careers their students want to pursue, they can connect the coursework with the attainment of their students’ dreams. Assignments, field trips, guest speakers, service projects and more can allow students to explore their interests and prepare for their various career paths.4. Allows them to acquire skills and industry knowledge that can empower young entrepreneursInternships, apprenticeships, and other hands-on opportunities are just a few of the ways young people can begin to excel in their fields of interest. Studies show that students who are exposed to career options early on in their educational journey graduate high school in greater numbers (93% over the national average of 80%). Career-minded education gives students a distinct competitive advantage.5. Positions them to know their objectives before investing time and moneyMost young people have been taught to first pick a college to attend, then pick a major, and when they finally graduate, then decide what job they want to do. But reversing that order would help direct them toward purpose-driven education and save them from havin g to figure out life with that enormous financial clock ticking.Mark C. How to Form a Rock-Solid Workplace Support System

How to Form a Rock-Solid Workplace Support System How to Form a Rock-Solid Workplace Support System When you return to work from maternity leave, you’re going to need some help. It really is challenging to do everything yourself. What you need at work, just like at home, is a support system you can count on.   A workplace support system consists mostly of people within your company who you can count on for both personal and professional support. It may also include people outside of your organization who can give you a different perspective from a different work culture. These people know your strengths and weaknesses, want to see you succeed, are good listeners, and will pick up the phone when you call. Here’s how to create a solid workplace support team  to help you transition into (or back into) working motherhood. Recognize a Lot Has Changed If you got 12 weeks of maternity leave, many things have changed in that one business quarter. Think about the following issues: What policies have been implemented or altered that may affect your work? Who received a promotion or changed positions that you need to adapt to? What new products and services were introduced that you need to get up to speed on?   Also, notice how you have changed. Although your position may not have changed, how you’ll do business may. One of your top priorities is caring for your family, which may affect your decision-making. Before the baby, you may have worked at a fast pace. Now that youre sleep deprived and maybe pumping breast milk at work, your pace will change. A workplace support system will support the new you, accept your new pace and help you accept it as well. Get Reacquainted With the New You Whether you’re returning from your first or a subsequent maternity leave, you may feel lost and alone with your problems. Incorporating motherhood with work is no joke.  There’s this new normal you need to discover with new limits you will hit. Before you begin building your  support system, perform a bit of self-discovery.   You probably value the quality time spent with your family, good time management, and an efficient work process. Welcome to working motherhood! You want to work hard and so you feel good rushing home to your family. Besides this, though, think about what else is important to you now that you’re a working mom. Know your needs and wants so you are clear when reaching out to others at work.   Decide Who, What, Where, and When Use the four W’s to create, build, and grow your workplace support system. Who do you want to include in on your support team? You want to select people who have helped you in the past, who want to see you succeed at work and at home, and who understand you well, especially the “new you. What do you need help with? What areas are you weak in or don’t have time for? What clients aren’t working well with you anymore? What tasks do you really want to delegate? Where do you need help? Is it at an offsite location? Is a trip that you don’t want to go on? Do you need to meet somewhere for lunch to talk about your transition back from maternity leave? When do you need your support team to jump in? Is there a time of the day, month, or year you would need them most? Do you have access to a team calendar so you can see who could help and when? Use Your Strengths to Give Back Friendship is a two-way street. This goes for friendship at work as well. People are going to give if you are willing to give back. The easiest way to give back is to help with things that you’re strong in. Is it easy for you to calm an aggravated customer? Offer to handle a difficult conference call. Is giving a presentation about your company a walk in the park for you? Then offer your presentation services. Be ready to offer any of your strengths when reaching out to your workplace support system. Also, be on the lookout to surprise people  with your assistance when they need it most. After youre back up and running after maternity leave, you may become a working mom that others look up to. Be available and open to new working moms and dads who may need the same type of support you needed when you first got back to work. Think of Your System as a Work In Progress Your needs will change over time, so keep your group fresh. People change companies or start families, and new hires with a fresh perspective can shake things up a bit, in a good way. Plus, your support system will shrink and grow depending on your needs and the availability of others. Consider it a work in progress, always. There will be days when you nail it at work and others when you’re lost. But with a rock-solid workplace support system in place, youll know you can figure things out.

Research Working for a company accused of misconduct can cost you money

Research Working for a company accused of misconduct can cost you money Research Working for a company accused of misconduct can cost you money When you work for a company that’s been up to no good, employers will start to think you’re up to no good - even if you’re innocent. Working for a company that’s been accused of misconduct can not only cost your professional reputation, it will literally cost you money, according to a new working paper from Harvard Business School.Looking at the resumes and resulting pay of executives looking for new work, researchers George Serafeim and Boris Groysberg found that there is a guilt by association when you have worked for a company rocked by scandal.“You have this great name on your CV, and suddenly it goes from being an asset to a liability,” Serafeim told Harvard Business School.Research: Even if you’re innocent, your future job compensation goes down when you’ve worked for a company that’s been shamedUsing data from an executive search firm, the researchers looked at job-switching executives with work histories at firms that had committed financial misconduct.Even controlling for factors like education, gender, and experience, they found that the executives with a stigmatized company on their resume - 18% of the 2,034 executives placed between 2004 and 2011- experienced a significant decrease in pay, about 4% lower on average, after switching firms. If the financial scandal had occurred recently, and if you were a financial executive when it occurred, interviewers were more suspicious of your involvement, and docked pay accordingly.  The researchers found that the “stigma effect” increased depending on the employee’s seniority, the employee’s proximity in relation to the scandal, and how recently the financial scandal had occurred.“If a candidate’s record generates sufficient concern to devalue, why entertain any risk when there is the safer option to shun?” the paper speculates about why the pay dock could occur. “Even when executives are free from wrongdoing, stigma costs can materialize out of the increased burden of scrut iny. Higher-ranked positions are more visible, and such scrutiny translates into higher costs for arbiters to promote such candidates.”How to talk to future employers about having worked for a shamed companyIf you’ve worked for a company that’s been shamed, there’s still a way for you to salvage your reputation. When you go in for an interview, acknowledge the elephant on your resume. You can tactfully acknowledge the scandal, without badmouthing your previous employer, by being upfront with an interviewer about how your personal values diverge from what happened at your company. That’s the proactive advice Randy Conley, Vice President of Client Services and Trust Practice Leader at the leadership development company  The Ken Blanchard Companies,  advised. When asked what he would tell Uber employees who have worked for a company that’s been publicly shamed, he provided a script you can adapt for yourself: “I was afforded a lot of wonderful opportunities at Uber to grow my skillset, to make some really good contributions. My personal values were a mismatch with the organization. The way I conduct myself, the things I that I believe about how you should treat people, that wasn’t shared by the organization as a whole and some of its senior leadership.”The bottom lineAfter you acknowledge the elephant, move on. You want to be spending your valuable interview time talking about your skills and goals, not your checkered work history.

Attorney-Client Privilege and the Kovel Rule

Attorney-Client Privilege and the Kovel Rule Attorney-Client Privilege and the Kovel Rule Youve probably heard the phrase on TV or in the movies, even if youve thankfully never found yourself in the predicament of needing a lawyer to defend your rights. Attorney-client privilege, also sometimes called lawyer-client privilege, is the provision in the law that says that what you tell your lawyer stays between you and your lawyer. He cant be forced to testify as to what you said. He doesnt have to provide his notes of the conversation in the discovery process- the part of a lawsuit that involves both sides having a legal obligation to share all information thats pertinent to the case. Lawyer-client confidentiality is an offshoot of this provision. Lawyer-Client Privilege vs. Confidentiality   Lawyer-client confidentiality isnt quite the same as lawyer-client privilege, although its based on the same premise. Confidentiality refers to an attorneys legal obligation not to divulge what his client tells him. Doing so is an ethics violation and could lead to disciplinary sanctions, unless the client gives his lawyer his informed consent to go ahead and speak. The client can waive his right to lawyer-client privilege as well.   The Kovel Rule   The Kovel Rule is an extension of the legal principles of lawyer-client privilege and confidentiality. In addition to lawyers,  it also extends to other professional experts who might be involved in a case, such as an accountant  who is consulted by the client or indirectly through the clients attorney. These experts might include financial advisors or financial planners. The rule takes its name from Louis Kovel, an IRS agent who later joined a law firm that specialized in tax cases. He lent his expertise in tax accounting to case preparation and client representation. In 1961, Kovel was sentenced to prison for refusing to answer questions in court about discussions he had with a client. He believed that those conversations were protected by the principle of lawyer-client privilege, and an appeals court agreed with him. His conviction was overturned. Challenges to the Rule   All the same, the IRS has won several key decisions in the federal courts, limiting the extent of the protections afforded to clients under the Kovel Rule. The upshot is that clients are becoming less frank in their discussions with tax counsel, which, in turn, makes it more difficult for these attorneys, accountants, and other professionals to give them sound and accurate advice. A 2010 case established the precedent that the Kovel Rule does not apply to charges involving criminal activities such as fraud and tax evasion. The Takeaway   The bottom line is that an accountants advice in a tax case is not automatically protected by the principles of confidentiality  and privilege, regardless of the intent of the Kovel Rule. The rule might afford some slight protection or at least a blurring of the line if the accountant has been formally engaged in writing by the attorney. But ensuring that the Kovel Rule is upheld typically requires much more detailed legal maneuvering. Some states are more protective of accountant-client discussions than the federal government, but keep in mind that the IRS has historically taken a hard and firm stand against this rule and can probably be counted on to challenge it, particularly when serious charges are involved.

What to Do When Your Friends Want Your Professional Help and Advice - The Muse

What to Do When Your Friends Want Your Professional Help and Advice - The Muse What to Do When Your Friends Want Your Professional Help and Advice You would do just about anything for your friends. But, when “putting in a good word” turns into a straight-up request for a job, or a quick favor becomes asking you to work for free, you’re in need of a way to politely decline. Here’s a guide to the most common awkward situations, and what you can do to maintain your professional rep- without losing friends. 1. Your Friend Wants an lntroduction So, your friend asks you to connect her with an important person in your network. Even if you think it’s a great idea, you should always start with a double-opt in email, which gives your contact the opportunity to decline. (Here’s a template.) On the other hand, if you have a feeling there is no way these two people will get along, trust your instincts and know it’s OK to say no. Instead, tell your friend that you would be happy to introduce her to somebody else you know who may be a better fit. Or, pass along her resume, but leave it up to your colleague to pursue a meeting. 2. Your Friend Wants You to Do Things for Free Whether you’ve working at a perk-filled job (free concert tickets, heavily discounted furniture, an influential social media account, you name it), or you’re just getting your own business off the ground, you’ve probably had a few friends ask you if they can just have stuff for free. And, while you may want to be kind, and subscribe to the philosophy that one or two giveaways here or there won’t matter in the long run, they can start to add up in a hurry. (And I don’t just mean financially.) Once you offer free swag to one friend, you’ll feel inclined to offer it to another, and another- creating a snowball effect. So, set a precedent early on with friends. Either determine a system that you feel comfortable with (and that makes sense for you), or kindly explain that at this time you simply can’t. Blame it on your bottom line, or better yet, blame it on your company’s policy. That said, another option is bartering. That way you’re staying true to your own rules, but swapping services in a way that works for you and your friends. Remember, you worked hard to get where you are and your friends should respect that. 3. Your Friend Wants to Work for You Have you ever heard that you should only hire somebody you could fire? Telling your close buddy that he’s out of a job can put a damper on your friendship, to say the least. Avoid that awful outcome entirely by telling your pal from the start that you value his friendship so highly that you don’t want anything to jeopardize it. Per discounting your work, it’s helpful if you make a blanket policy so that your contact doesn’t feel like it’s personal- and so you don’t have to have this awkward conversation all the time. 4. Your Friend Wants You to Spend Your Money on His Products Your pal’s a little bit under quota in his tech company’s sales goals for the month- would you mind asking your manager if he wants to purchase a new database organizing system? Or, your buddy needs to prove that his newsletter initiative works to increase sales- are you cool clicking through the links and buying something? Anything? It can be small. Please? On the opposite end of the spectrum, your best friend’s launching his own company and his idea’s pretty awesome. And he wants to know if you’d like to be an early investor. If you believe in the idea and want to provide financial support- great! Just make sure you go through all the proper steps to give him the money. This is no time to be casual and just Venmo it over. Also recognize that many new companies fail, and there’s a chance you’ll never see your investment again. Be realistic about the risks before you say yes to funding a new initiative: It could put a strain on your finances- and your friendship. In both cases, if you can’t (or don’t want to) spend your money, offer to help out and show your support in a different way. Perhaps you can volunteer, offer promotion on your social media outlets, or spread the word to your contacts. Every little bit helps! And if the other person gives you any grief (a.k.a., suggesting that a true friend would just open up his or her wallet), you may want to distance yourself for the time being. 5. Your Friend Wants Professional Advice, All the Time Friends are there to lend you an ear through just about anything. However, there is a point when you feel like you are offering more than friendly advice- like when your friend asks for “your read” on contracts (a.k.a., your legal services). If a close friend seems to rely on your feedback for every professional move and decision, you can start to feel like you’re being taken advantage of. After all, you’re her friend, not her life coach, and you don’t want a friendship to ever feel one-sided. Next time she asks for expertise, respond with an offer to help her track down a reputable professional who can answer her questions. If that doesn’t get the message across, go with a half-joke along the lines of, “Sure, I’ll give you my discounted family and friends rate.” That usually drives the point home that you’re typically paid for this kind of advice. And if he’s constantly coming to you with general career questions? Well, in that case I’ve found that a little confidence booster goes a long way. So, don’t forget to remind him that he’s intelligent, savvy, and capable of making great career decisions on his own! So, it’s only natural that you want to help them have wonderful and fulfilling lives and careers. According to a Wall Street Journal report citing documents it obtained from the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, the chip maker is being investigated for age discrimination claims by its former employees.Report: average age of Intel employees in one layoff spree was 49The Journal said “dozens of former employees sought legal advice on whether they could sue” after a round of layoffs in 2016, and some of those disgruntled employees filed complaints with the federal watchdog.
